Schachen (toponym)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schachen, in the second link -schess (en) or -schuh , is a German toponym that means ' wood , forest '. As a field and place name originally for "shrub forest along lakes and rivers, later also for grassland in such locations".

Word origin

The word comes from Middle High German schache / schach from Old High German  scahho . It generally means forest 'or' scrub ', as a single standing forest or Vorsaum a forest , to forest plot ( "You are the Stämb and Schächen which estate in irem, our holzhayen fürzaigen." - Berchthesgadner Forest order ). Related are Old Norse skógr , Swedish skog , Danish skov 'forest'. In place names, a piece of forest that was left standing during the reclamation of the High Middle Ages is to be assumed as the cleared name .

In addition, in the broader sense, there is a complex of meanings ' promontory , headland ', according to Grimm, “a tongue-like strip at all”. In Switzerland, for example, there does not have to be any connection to forest cover. Related to this is the Old Norse skagi 'headland'.
