The Schachensee is a 1670 m above sea level. NN lying small mountain lake on Schachen in the Wetterstein Mountains in Bavaria .
The Schachensee is roughly elliptical in shape. Its area is about 0.75 hectares , the length of its shoreline is about 330 m. At its widest point - in north-south direction - the lake is around 70 m wide, in east-west direction it has a maximum extension of around 142 m. The lake lies in a hollow and has neither an inflow nor outflow that is visible above ground.
Surroundings of the lake
Southwest of the lake, at 1866 m , is the royal house on the Schachen of King Ludwig II of Bavaria , built between 1869 and 1871 , which can be visited during guided tours. The distance between the Schachensee and the Königshaus, which is about 200 meters higher, is about 700 m as the crow flies, but it is about two kilometers on the way.
At the royal house are also:
- the Schachenhaus , a mountain hut managed between late May / early June and early / mid October (without winter room), in which you can also stay overnight after prior notification;
- to the west of the royal family there is a vantage point from which one has a very nice view of the surrounding peaks of the Wetterstein Mountains and especially of the Rein valley ;
- the botanical alpine garden created around 1900 , a branch of the botanical garden in Munich ;
