The Schachen is a lookout point in the Wetterstein Mountains near Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Elmau . It is 1870  m high and is in the immediate vicinity of the Dreitorspitze and the Meilerhütte above the Reintal . He is since 1970 in 39.65 square kilometers large nature reserve Schachen and Reintal that after the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive of the European Union is protected.

description

On the Schachen is the royal house of the Bavarian King Ludwig II. , Which was built from 1869 to 1871 and used by Ludwig II during his annual stays in the mountains. Since the Schachen offers a good view of the Reintal, it is a popular stopover for mountain tours in the region, most of which start from Elmau .

Next to the royal house there is an alpine garden that was laid out around 1900 with alpine plants from the Munich Botanical Garden .

The Schachenhaus (1866 meters) can be reached via three routes: via the steeply ascending Alpenvereinsweg 801 of the German Alpine Club or Nordalpenweg 01 of the Austrian Alpine Club from the Bockhütte (1052 meters) in the Reintal or descending on this footpath from the Meilerhütte (2374 meters) at the Border to Austria and via the passable Alpenvereinsweg 841 (Schachenweg) from Elmau (1008 meters). A narrow footpath from the Wettersteinalm (1464 meters) meets the Schachenweg in a westerly direction about a kilometer below the Schachenhaus.

Flora and fauna

On the Schachen there is one of the largest contiguous deposits of pines , and therefore there is also a corresponding number of nutcrackers who like to feed on the Zirbelsamen.

The alpine salamander is also common on Schachen.
