Chess forest

The Schachawald is a forest area near Moosbach in the Innviertel of Upper Austria .

Location and landscape

The forest is located in the Inn and Hausruckviertel hill country around 12 kilometers southeast of Braunau am Inn at the northern foot of the Kobernaußerwald . It extends about 3½ kilometers in a north-south direction and 2½ kilometers west-east between Weng im Innkreis and Treubach , east of Moosbach. It lies almost entirely on the municipality of Moosbach; the southern tip belongs to Treubach. Together with the Gaugsham Forest to the east , it forms the largest closed forest area in the Innviertel hill country. It has its highest point in the Schloßberg  (approx.  440  m above sea level ) near the village of Schacha.

As a forest forest, the forest consists almost exclusively of spruce trees, only in the northeast is a small part of mixed deciduous and coniferous forest.

history

The name is the bairisch frequent letters from Schachen ( Old High German  scahho '), mostly as wood forest rest of the deforestation that -Forest , attached is probably due to the local Schacha, himself originally called after the forest later.

In the Middle Ages, an extensive forest area stretched between the Gaugshamer and Schachawald on the one hand and the Kobernaußerwald and Hausruck . The area from Treubach to Lohnsburg was only cleared in the High Middle Ages , so that the Schachawald became a forest island. This clearing zone is marked by the -eck , -schlag and -reut names, the -ed names indicate older, repopulated settlement areas.

Leisure, culture and sights

The forest is an important local recreation area and has numerous hiking trails through it.

Special features are:

  • Keltenschanze Moosbach , near Hufnagl, an old rampart
  • Burgstall Schloßberg above the Keltenschanze, abandoned castle
  • Eustachius , a Marterl, in the middle of the forest

Schachawald wind energy priority zone

In 2011, the Schachawald priority zone was identified with the Upper Austria wind power master plan. According to the assessment by the wind energy working group of the state government, an expansion of wind energy appears economically, ecologically and also in terms of landscape protection to be justifiable.

A project with 4 systems was rejected in 2012 by the municipality of Moosbach because of the lack of benefits for the local population.

The Gaugshamerwald is also intended as a priority zone.
