Gaugsham Forest

The Gaugshamer Forest is a forest area near Altheim in the Innviertel of Upper Austria .

Location and landscape

The forest is located in the Inn and Hausruckviertel hill country at the northern foot of the Kobernaußerwald , about 14 kilometers southeast of Braunau am Inn , 4 kilometers south of Altheim. It extends about 4 kilometers in a north-west-south-east direction and 1½ kilometers in a south-west-north-east direction between Stern and Roßbach . It is partly in Altheimer municipality area, the southern part belongs to Treubach and Roßbach. Together with the Schachawald to the east, it forms the largest closed forest area in the Innviertel hill country. It has its highest elevation in the Aichberg  (approx.  480  m above sea level ) above Treubach.

The name comes from the small town of Gaugsham at the northwest end near Stern.

As a forest forest, the forest consists almost exclusively of spruce trees and only occasionally has stands that are closer to nature.

history

In the Middle Ages, an extensive forest area stretched between the Gaugshamer and Schachawald on the one hand and the Kobernaußerwald and Hausruck . The area from Treubach to Lohnsburg was only cleared in the High Middle Ages , so that the Gaugshamerwald became a forest island. This clearing zone is marked by the -eck , -schlag and -reut names, the -ed names indicate older, repopulated settlement areas.

Leisure, culture and sights

There is a small chapel in the forest, the Hofinger Chapel above Wesen.

The Innviertel Way of St. James leads through the forest on its stage from Stern to Treubach.

Wind energy priority zone Schalchen

In 2011, the Upper Austria wind power master plan identified the priority zone area of Schalchen , which comprises an area of around 1 km in the northwest part near Schalchen (municipality of Altheim and Treubach). According to the assessment by the wind energy working group of the state government, an expansion of wind energy appears economically, ecologically and also in terms of landscape protection to be justifiable.

The chess forest is also intended as a priority zone.
