Dan Mândrilă
Dan Mândrilă (* 1938 in Chișinău ; † December 31, 1992 ) was a Romanian tenor saxophonist , clarinetist and composer of modern jazz . He is considered one of the outstanding jazz musicians on the Romanian jazz scene of the 1960s and 1970s.
Live and act
Mândrilă studied at the “Ciprian Porumbescu” Conservatory in Bucharest . From 1963 he worked in the studio orchestra of the state record label Electrecord. In 1966 he recorded with Richard Oschanitzky's orchestra , the following year with Friedrich Gulda and Guido Manusardi .
With the pianist Richard Oschanitzky, the alto saxophonist Stefan Berendei, the bassist Johnny Răducanu and the drummer Eugen Gondi, he founded the Freetet , which advanced into free jazz . In 1969 it performed Oschanitzky's Double Concert in Leipzig with great success . In 1970 he recorded with Václav Zahradník's East European All Stars Big Band . In the same year, Boško Petrović brought him to his Nonconvertible All Stars , with whom he performed at the Berlin Jazz Days in 1971 . In the same year he presented his quartet at the Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw. He was also involved in several albums by the singer Aura Urziceanu.
In 1977 he was able to record his first album , dedicated to rock jazz , with his nonet under his own name, which was released three years later. Together with the pianist Mircea Tiberian and the saxophonist Nicolas Simion , he founded one of the most successful jazz formations in Romania; In 1988 he performed with this group Opus 4 at the Jazz-Bühne in East Berlin.
