Boško Petrović (born February 18, 1935 in Bjelovar , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † January 10, 2011 in Zagreb , Croatia ) was a Croatian vibraphonist and music producer of modern jazz .
Live and act
Petrović took violin lessons at the age of seven and then switched to the accordion and drums to the vibraphone . In 1959 he founded a band from which the Zagreb Jazz Quartet, which existed until 1970 (with Davor Kajfeš , Miljenko Prohaska and Silvije Glojnarić ) emerged, which merged the music of the then Yugoslavia with jazz and became one of the founders of Balkan jazz . In the eight years of its existence, the quartet has given numerous concerts in Central Europe and the Soviet Union. John Lewis made sure that it was involved with a piece on his European album Animal Dance (1964). In 1968/69 the combo was expanded to include Art Farmer to a quintet.
In 1970 Petrović formed the BP Convention with younger musicians , with which he toured Central Europe and Scandinavia, India, Japan, the Soviet Union and the United States. He also performed with the formation of Oliver Nelson at the Montreux Jazz Festival ( Swiss Suite , 1971). Together with musicians from the Eastern Bloc at the time, such as Michał Urbaniak , Zbigniew Seifert , Włodzimierz Nahorny , Csaba Deseő , Aladár Pege , Jiří Stivín and Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky , he founded the Novocovertibile All Stars , which he directed and first performed at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1971 subsequently presented various recordings. Since 1985 he has also played in a duo with the pianist Neven Frangeš.
Petrović also presented jazz programs on radio and television and ran his own jazz club in Zagreb , where he performed himself and recorded with Joe Pass and other musicians for his label Jazzete .
Boško Petrović died in January 2011 in his apartment in Zagreb. Various concerts were organized in his memory in the same year.
