Włodzimierz Nahorny (* 5. November 1941 in Radzyń Podlaski ) is a Polish saxophonist and pianist of modern jazz , which has emerged as a film composer.

Live and act

Nahorny has been active as a musician since 1959. From 1960 he studied clarinet at the State Music Academy in Sopot ; there he made his first jazz experiences as the pianist of the North Coast Combo (later as their saxophonist). In 1965 he successfully led his own trio, but also appeared in the band of Andrzej Trzaskowski on the Jazz Jamboree . In 1966 he made guest appearances with his group in the Federal Republic of Germany, including at the Jazz East-West Festival , but also in the GDR, Hungary, Denmark and Norway. In 1967 he got into free jazz and recorded the album Heart in a trio with Jacek Ostaszewski and Sergiusz Perkowski . In the following decade he played with the blues rock band Breakout and with Boško Petrović ( Berlin Jazz Days 1971), presented more conventional productions under his own name and accompanied the Polish vocal group Novi Singers and singer Marianna Wróblewska on several albums. Since the 1990s he has combined compositions of classical art music with jazz. His sextet recorded several albums dedicated to individual Polish composers. The albums with his jazz arrangements of selected melodies by Karol Szymanowski ( Mity ) and Fryderyk Chopin ( Fantazja Polska ) have been nominated for the most important Polish musician award, the Fryderyk . He also composed for theater and film and, together with Bogdan Loebl, presented two albums with Christmas carols .

Prizes and awards

At the Jazz nad Odrą ( Jazz on the Oder ) festival in 1965, Nahorny and his trio were recognized as the best group in modern jazz. In 1967 Duke Ellington presented him with the prize for best soloist at the Vienna International Jazz Festival; in the same year he was named “Musician of the Year” by the European magazine Jazz Forum . In 1972 and 1973 he was awarded at the Polish Song Festival. 1974 and 1986 he was highlighted as a "deserved cultural activist". In 1997 he received the Grand Prix Jazz Melomani , and in 2000 the Polish Music Prize Fryderyk in the category of jazz musicians.
