Novi Singers (also NOVI ) was a Polish vocal ensemble in the field of jazz . The A-Cappella group , which mostly performed with instrumental accompaniment, was founded in Warsaw in 1964 and disbanded in 1985. The Novi Singers were among the most successful bands in Polish jazz and were famous for their polyphonic scat singing.
history
The group was founded in 1964 by five students from Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Muzyczna (German State University of Music ) in Warsaw. The name of the band is an abbreviation: NOVI stands for New Original Vocal Instruments (at the same time it sounds just like nowi , the new ones ). Novi Singers were the first Polish band to follow a trend in jazz in the 1960s to use the human voice as an instrument. The members were also trained instrumentalists and played the violin (Wanat, Kawka), percussion instruments (Parzyński) and flute (Mych).
At first the band only appeared on the radio; In 1965 this was followed by an appearance at the Jazz Jamboree , a concert in the National Philharmonic and an award-winning appearance at the XV. International Jazz Festival in Zurich . In October of the same year the Novi Singers recorded their first EP .
In 1967 the ensemble became a quartet after Aleksander Głuch left it. In 1973 the founder Bernard Kawka started a solo career and emigrated to the United States , whereby the band shrunk to a trio. In the same year the Novi Singers appeared as the only European, non- Yugoslav band in Belgrade at the special edition of the renowned Newport Jazz Festival .
In 1975 the band became a quartet again. The fourth member was initially Mieczysław Eligiusz Litwiński, who was replaced after a short time by Tomasz Ochalski. The latter was a member of the band until 1977 and partly played the piano in the instrumental section, which occasionally accompanied the band during their performances. In 1977 Ryszard replaced Szeremeta Ochalski. In 1985 the band broke up. In 2001, as part of the Warszawska Jesień Festival, the Novi Singers gave a unique concert in the original line-up (with Bernard Kawka).
In 1978 the band was listed by Down Beat as the best vocal band in the world.
The Novi Singers recorded soundtracks for several Polish films, including Gra by Jerzy Kawalerowicz (1968) and Szklana kula by Stanisław Różewicz (1972).
