Live and act
Szukalski played in the early 1970s with Jan Wróblewski and in the band of saxophonist Zbigniew Namysłowski , heard on the legendary album Winobranie . In the mid-1970s he was also known in the West through his participation in the ECM albums Balladyna by Tomasz Stańko (1975) and Rodina by Edward Vesala . In the following years he continued to work with both Vesela and Stańko. In 1977 he founded the formation The Quartet with pianist Sławomir Kulpowicz , bassist Paweł Jarzębski and drummer Janusz Stefański , with which he made a guest appearance in Germany in 2006. Joachim-Ernst Berendt brought him 1981 for the New Jazz Meeting Baden-Baden , where he under the motto We Remember Coltrane with Rashied Ali , Roman Schwaller , Gerd Dudek , Leszek Żądło Alan Skidmore , Tomasz Stanko, Sławomir Kulpowicz, Janusz Stefański and Albert Mangelsdorff played . After martial law in Poland 1981-1983 he formed with Wojciech Karolak and Czesław Bartkowski the Time Killers (album of the same name, 1984). In the next few years he worked in a duo with Janusz Szprot, but also with Tomasz Stańko, Grażyna Auguścik and Milan Svoboda .
Since 1986 he has led his own quartet. In 1991 Szukalski released the album Body and Soul on the Polonia label (with Artur Dutkiewicz , Andrzej Cudzich and Marek Stach). In 2000 he led a quartet with Jarosław Śmietana , which presented the album Phone Consultations . In the late 1990s he worked on the album Escape by the trumpeter Piotr Wojtasik , and in 2001 on the album Grechuta by the Wojciech Majewski Quintet . He also recorded with Anna Maria Jopek and Agnieszka Skrzypek . Shortly before his death, Tomasz toured with Apostolis Anthimos and Arild Andersen .
After Richard Cook / Brian Morton, Szukalski recalls Ben Webster in his ballad play ; other role models are Lester Young , Stan Getz and Warne Marsh .
