Czesław Bartkowski (born April 19, 1943 in Litzmannstadt ) is a Polish modern jazz drummer .

Live and act

Bartkowski received piano lessons from the age of six. From 1955 he studied music in Breslau (majoring in drums). Since the early sixties he played jazz, first in local bands, then after moving to Warsaw with Krzysztof Komeda (1962-64) and with Zbigniew Namysłowski , with whom he performed at international jazz festivals. He then played for Michał Urbaniak before he had to do his military service. In 1969 he toured Asia and Australia with Namyslowski before joining Czesław Niemen ("Czerwony Album", 1971). Then he worked again at Urbaniak, with whom he performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival and then in North America, for example at the Newport Jazz Festival 1974. He also played in the Polish radio big band and with Namyslowski before forming a trio with Tomasz Stańko and Adam Makowicz , with whom he also performed in Germany. In 1977 his debut album "Drums Dream" was released. With Tomasz Szukalski and Wojciech Karolak he formed the Time Killers . He also worked with Clark Terry's big band , with Zbigniew Seifert , Jan Wróblewski , Sławomir Kulpowicz , Aladár Pege , Ben Webster and the “ Novi Singers ”. He also recorded with Ewa Bem , Jerzy Wasowski , Zbigniew Wegehaupt and Rolf Kühn . He is currently working with the pianist Andrzej Jagodziński.

Since 1993 he has been teaching drums at the Warsaw School of Music.
