Sławomir Kulpowicz (born January 17, 1952 in Warsaw ; † February 7, 2008 there ) was a Polish pianist of modern jazz and new music .

Kulpowicz came from a family of musicians and had piano lessons from an early age. He studied at the Warsaw Music Academy and then in Katowice , where he also played in the student big band. During his studies he won several prizes. He then founded his own band, “Jazz Carriers”, but also played in ensembles for new music . From 1976 to 1978 he was a member of Zbigniew Namysłowski's band , with whom he went on a European tour and recorded five albums. Since 1978 he was one of the members of “The Quartet” together with Tomasz Szukalski , Paweł Jarzębski and Janusz Stefański, and he also functioned as its main composer. Since 1980 he has appeared with his own groups, for example with the trio "In / formation", which occasionally appeared together with Tomasz Stańko . He performed three solo concerts at the John Coltrane Festival in Los Angeles .

Kulpowicz, who also wrote film music ( Rh + , 2005), died of cancer.
