Peter Warren

Peter Warren (born November 21, 1935 in Hempstead , New York ) is an American bassist and cellist of modern jazz and new improvisation music .

Live and act

Warren comes from a musical family, made his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 17, and studied at Adelphi College and the Juilliard School . He first worked as a cellist in the field of classical music, for example as a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra . He then changed genre and played double bass , initially in the shows in Las Vegas . In 1966 he went on tour with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra and then worked with Dionne Warwick until 1969 . He also studied with Chuck Israels , played with Herbie Mann and formed the New York Bass Revolution with David Izenzon and eight other bassists .

In 1970 he moved to Europe. There he played his debut album Bass Is (together with three other double bass players). He also worked with Jean-Luc Ponty , with Joachim Kühn , with Terumasa Hino , with John Tchicai and with the Swiss group "Wiebelfetzer", with Tomasz Stańko and Edward Vesala , with Albert Mangelsdorff and Masahiko Satō as well as with Rolf Kühn , with whom he also recorded records for European labels. He has also performed with Carla Bley , Michel Portal and Anthony Braxton . After his return to New York City in 1974 he was a member of the band Jack DeJohnettes , with whom he recorded albums such as " Special Edition " (1979) or "Tin Can Alley" (1980) and toured internationally until 1983 and played festivals.

In 1981 he recorded his album "Solidarity", which is dedicated to the memory of Stu Martin and has a top-class cast. In 1982 he founded his own fusion band with John Scofield and Mike Stern . He later turned to improvisational music and worked in the Boston area with a variety of musicians, including Ken Vandermark . In 1994 he founded two improvisation ensembles, the Cheap Suit Serenaders and Elastic Consort . With Matt Samolis, the flutist of Elastic Consort , he studied the steel cello, a sound sculpture made of tuned steel wires and cymbals. In recent years his interest has mainly focused on the painted game of cymbals. Currently (2008) he appears with the Metal and Glass Ensemble and the Glenn Dickson Acoustic Ambient Ensemble .

Warren was active as a lecturer at various European and American universities and as the author of the specialist magazine "Bass Player".
