Janusz Muniak
Janusz Muniak (born June 3, 1941 in Cracow ; † January 31, 2016 there ) was a Polish tenor saxophonist of modern jazz . He played in the free idiom for a long time, while in his later years he used a more traditional style of play.
Live and act
Muniak played from 1960 in Lublin in Witold Miszczak's band. In 1963 Tomasz Stańko brought him to his group Jazz Darings , one of the earliest free jazz formations in Europe. In 1965 he was involved in the legendary album Synopsis by Andrzej Trzaskowski . Then he worked with Krzysztof Komeda ( Moja Ballada ), subsequently also with Don Cherry . In 1985 he performed at the Warsaw Jazz Jamboree with the pianist Hank Jones . He found international recognition early on; in 1978 he was listed in the Down Beat Critics Poll among the talents of his instrument who deserved more attention. He has also performed with the Novi Singers , Ronnie Burrage , George Cables , Don Cherry , Joe Lovano , Ted Curson , Joe Lovano, Hank Jones, Freddie Hubbard , Jasper van't Hof , Eddie Gladden , Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Henderson , Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis , Lyle Mays , Pat Metheny , Hank Mobley , Charlie Ventura , Akira Sakata , Archie Shepp , Charlie Ventura, Yōsuke Yamashita and Polish musicians like Tomasz Stańko, Zbigniew Namysłowski , Zbigniew Seifert and most recently also played with Nigel Kennedy . Muniak appeared in Germany with his own bands (around 2007 at the Leverkusen Jazz Days ), but also with Emil Mangelsdorff . Since 1992 he has been running his own jazz club in the old town of Krakow , in which he occasionally performed himself.
