Joachim Nikodem Mencel (born January 1, 1966 in Kluczbork ) is a Polish jazz musician (piano, composition, arrangement).

Live and act

Mencel completed his jazz studies at the Katowice Music Academy in 1991 . He also studied with the pianists Beli Lakatos and Barry Harris . While still a student he worked in the groups of Piotr Wojtasik , with whom he was involved in a recording for Radio Poland in 1991.

In 1992 he founded the band New Life together with Mieczyslaw Szcześniak, Marcin Pospieszalski, Robert Cudzich and Piotr Jankowski , which also worked with Natalia Niemen. Since 1993 he has been a member of Janusz Muniak's quartet . Mencel also played in Andrzej Cudzich's quartet , with whom he recorded in 1997. A regular collaboration with the American clarinetist Brad Terry began in 1993. Since then he has performed with him in both a duet and a quartet in Poland, Germany, Russia and the USA. In 2002 Nigel Kennedy brought him for a project that was presented in London, Milan, Berlin, Hamburg, Krakow and at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival .

Mencel arranged for Ewa Bem (on her album Kakadu 2007), Mieczyslaw Szcześniak, Nina Stiller, Anna Maria Jopek and the Cameroonian singer Kaissy. In 2006 he composed the jazz cantata Miłość mi wszystko wyjaśniła to Karol Wojtyla's texts for jazz combo, string orchestra, boys' choir and soloists; Musicians such as Dino Saluzzi , Lee Konitz , Ewa Bem., Kaissa, Jorgos Skolias, Mieczyslaw Szcześniak, Janusz Muniak, the choir of the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra and the Beethoven Academy Orchestra took part in the premiere. He also worked with David Friedman , Ronnie Burrage , Charlie Mariano , Rufus Reid , Terry Clarke , Zbigniew Namysłowski , Vitold Rek , Jarek Śmietana and Maciej Sikała. He can also be heard on albums by Kinga Głyk and Martyna Jakubowicz.

Mencel led composition and improvisation courses as a visiting teacher at Webster University in Saint Louis. Since 2007 he has been a lecturer at the Krakow Music Academy .
