Hugo Bürgel

Hugo Bürgel (born April 14, 1853 in Landshut ; † July 3, 1903 in Munich ) was a German landscape painter .

Hugo Bürgel, son of a senior postal inspector, spent his youth in Landshut and Regensburg . Then he began a military career in the 2nd Bavarian Infantry Regiment "Kronprinz" in Laufen .

For health reasons he was given leave of absence from military service and in 1885 became a student of the Munich landscape painter Fink . After a stay in the climatic health resort of Lenggries, he quit military service in March 1887 and devoted himself to landscape painting. He attended Adolf Heinrich Lier's landscape painting school in Munich. Bürgel went on study trips to Dachau , Freising and Rügen .

In 1886 he became a member of the Münchner Kunstverein , in 1887 a member and 1896 chairman of the Munich Artists' Cooperative . He showed his works in the Munich Glass Palace and in the Kunstverein. In 1892 he was a co-founder and first chairman of the “ Luitpold Group ”, a spin-off from the artists' association. In 1898 he received the title of Royal Professor,

Hugo Bürgel was the father of the linguist Dr. Heinrich Bürgel (1878–1931), who became famous as a photographer in Sweden under the name Henry Buergel Goodwin .
