Joseph Peyré (born March 13, 1892 in Aydie , † December 26, 1968 in Cannes ) was a French writer and journalist. In 1935 he received the Prix ​​Goncourt for the novel Sang et Lumières .

Peyré was the son of a teacher and went to school in Pau . He studied in Paris (Lycée Henri IV) and Bordeaux, received his licentiate in philosophy (as a student of Alain ) and a doctorate in law. He practiced briefly as a lawyer and then became a journalist and was associated with Joseph Kessel . In the 1920s he began to publish as a writer.

The subjects of his books were the deserts (the Sahara), Spain (as in Sang et Lumières), mountains (he wrote about the Matterhorn, Mount Everest and George Mallory ) and his native Béarn (Basque Country). He was very connected to Spain and an amateur bullfighter.

He was an officer in the Legion of Honor .
