Akira Sakata ( Japanese 坂 田 明 , Sakata Akira ; * 1945 in Kure , Hiroshima Prefecture ) is a Japanese free jazz musician ( bass clarinet , alto saxophone , piano ).

Live and act

Sakata first studied marine biology at the University of Hiroshima and founded his first own formation Saibō-bunretsu ( 細胞 分裂 , "cell division") in Tokyo . From 1972 to 1979 he played in the trio of the pianist Yōsuke Yamashita , which - expanded to a quartet with Manfred Schoof - went on tour ( Distant Thunder , published in 1975 on Enja ). He then also belonged to the Jam Rice Sextet (with Yamashita, Toshinori Kondō , Gerald Ohshita , Hideaki Mochizuki and Shōta Koyama ), which recorded the album Jam Rice Relaxin ' live in 1986.

In 1980 he founded a trio with which he became known in Japan through an extensive tour. In 1981 he recorded the album Dance for the Enja label in trio with bassist Hiroshi Yoshino and drummer Nobu Fuji . That year he also performed at the Berlin Jazz Festival with his Sakata Orchestra .

From 1982 he worked with a sextet with two drummers and two guitarists, with whom he recorded the album Trauma ; he also worked with his Sakira Da-Da-Da Orchestra . In 1986 he played with the formation Last Exit ( Bill Laswell , Peter Brötzmann , Sonny Sharrock and Ronald Shannon Jackson ), to be heard on the album Noise of Trouble: Last Exit Live in Tokyo . Laswell then played bass and violin on Sakata's album Mooko , which he also produced. and that came out on Virgin Records. In 1986 Sakata also recorded duos with Peter Kowald (documented on the FMP album Duos: Europa-Amerika-Japan ).

In 1994 he toured Uzbekistan , Mongolia and China with the Flying Mijinko Band with Japanese, African and American musicians: in 1999 he performed with this formation and Bill Laswell at a World Music concert in Hiroshima.

In the early 2000s Sakata worked with his regular formations Harpacticoida , the Sakata Akira "3" mii, with whom he performed in Düsseldorf in 2003 and 2008, and with Kesutoradamashi , which is supposed to combine different musical styles . In 2004 he went on a US tour with DJ Krush . He has also played with various Japanese folk musicians and worked for various television documentaries dealing with marine biology. With Chikamorachi and Masahiko Satch, he released the album Proton Pump (Family Vineyard) in 2018 . With Johan Berthling and Paal Nilssen-Love he forms the Arashi Trio (Eng. "Sturm"). In 2019 Horyu-ji was released , with Christos Yermenoglou , Giovanni di Domenico and Giotis Damianidis .
