Idrees Sulieman
Idrees Dawud ibn Sulieman , actually Leonard Graham (born August 27, 1923 in Saint Petersburg , Florida , † July 23, 2002 in Saint Petersburg, Florida) was an American jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player . He changed his name after converting to Islam.
The bebop veteran Idrees Sulieman owes his fame to his participation in Thelonious Monk's first Blue Note Records session in 1947.
Live and act
Sulieman studied at the Boston Conservatory and worked first with local orchestras, later in the bands of Mercer Ellington , Cab Calloway , Earl Hines (1943/44), Count Basie , Lionel Hampton , Erskine Hawkins , Dizzy Gillespie and Illinois Jacquet . In 1956 he was a member of Friedrich Gulda’s American jazz group ; In 1958/59 he played with Randy Weston . Since then he has worked outside the USA, in Casablanca, Paris, from 1961 in Sweden (where he was on tour with the pianist Oscar Dennard ) and from 1964 finally in Copenhagen. During this time he made records with Gene Ammons , Teddy Charles , Coleman Hawkins , Ella Fitzgerald , André Hodeir , Thelonious Monk , Mal Waldron , Louis Jordan , Red Mitchell and the Clarke-Boland Big Band . In the latter he was from the mid-1960s to 1973. He also played frequently in radio big bands.
