Jerzy Milian

Jerzy Stanisław Milian (* 10. April 1935 in Poznań ; † 7. March 2018 in Katowice ) was a Polish vibraphonist , composer of modern jazz and painter.

Live and act

After attending the music school in his hometown, Milian led a quintet from 1953 to 1955, which included Stanisław Chwiłkowski, Ryszard Czaplicki, Jerzy Piątek and Stanisław Lisek. Between 1956 and 1958 he was part of Krzysztof Komeda's quartet and then played in Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski's quintet until 1960 . He recorded with both ensembles. Then he worked as the director of the radio and television orchestra in Katowice . He also led a trio that included Jacek Bednarek and Grzegorz Gierłowski. His composition Memory of Bach , stylistically reminiscent of the Modern Jazz Quartet , was very popular in Poland.

In 1973 Milian directed the International Song Festival in Sopot. He also wrote ballet and film music and was repeatedly active abroad as a guest soloist (now also documented on CD); In 1971 and 1972 he played at Jazz in the Kammer . He also performed at the Warsaw Jazz Jamboree festival with the Berliner Rundfunk dance orchestra . Milian was involved in 44 recordings between 1956 and 2003.
