Miljenko Prohaska

Miljenko Prohaska (born September 17, 1925 in Zagreb , Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes ; † May 29, 2014 in Zagreb, Croatia ) was a Yugoslav, later Croatian, double bass player , composer , arranger and orchestra conductor .

Live and act

As a child, Prohaska first learned to play the violin, then switched to the double bass, which he studied at the Conservatory and Academy for Music in his hometown (diploma in 1956). From the mid-1950s he worked as a bassist in the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, the Yugoslav Radio Orchestra and the Zagreb Jazz Quartet (led by Boško Petrović and Davor Kajfeš ), with whom he also toured Europe ( Animal Dance ). At the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1967 he presented his composition Concerto No. 2 for Orchestra with the Don Ellis orchestra . Between 1967 and 1969 he directed the Zagreb Festival of Popular Music. Then he worked mainly as a composer. From 1989 he directed the Radio Zagreb Dance Orchestra , from which the Croatian Radio Big Band emerged. He also emerged as orchestra leader at the Eurovision Song Contest .

As a composer he wrote numerous film scores , but also wrote for symphony orchestras, for the Modern Jazz Quartet and for formations of the Third Stream such as the Orchestra USA ; he also arranged for Josipa Lisac , Gabi Novak and Arsen Dedić . As an interpreter, he was involved in 36 recording sessions in the field of jazz, including with John Lewis , Lee Konitz , Ted Curson , Dan Mândrilă and Art Farmer . 1967–1968 and 1988–1990 he was the President of the Croatian Composers Association. He also participated in the Croatian Band Aid .

Prizes and awards

Prohaska received numerous awards for his compositions, including the Golden Arena for Best Film Music (1968), the Vladimir Nazor Award (1988) and the Porin Award (1995) for his life's work.
