Big Joe Turner
Big Joe Turner (born May 18, 1911 in Kansas City , Missouri , † November 24, 1985 in Inglewood , California ; actually Joseph Vernon Turner ) was an American boogie-woogie , blues and rock 'n' roll -Singer.
Live and act
Already at the age of fourteen he influenced the local jazz scene in his birthplace with his singing. In the mid-30s he met the American boogie-woogie pianist Pete Johnson , with whom he appeared together from then on. In 1936 he came to New York for the first time , where he met Count Basie .
On December 23, 1938, he and Johnson wrote his first songs in a swing concert at Carnegie Hall , namely Low Down Dog and It's All Right, Baby . He was sponsored by John Hammond that year . On December 30, 1938, he and Pete Johnson recorded his composition Roll 'Em Pete (Vocalion # 4607), followed by Cherry Red on June 30, 1939 . He then performed with various jazz greats such as Benny Goodman , Duke Ellington and Art Tatum . In 1945 he signed a recording deal with National Records, where it was produced by Herb Abramson . In 1951 Ahmet Ertegün became aware of him through Abramson and signed him for Atlantic Records . As a result, the single Chains of Love was created , which reached a high position in the rhythm and blues charts and was later covered by Pat Boone . In the 1950s he had several major and minor single hits, including Shake, Rattle and Roll , Flip, Flop & Fly and Corrine, Corrina , and played with Elmore James (TV Mama) and King Curtis , among others . Overall, the successes were limited, but they were enough to make a living.
Turner toured most of the 1960s and 1970s. He recorded with jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Eldridge and also played with Axel Zwingenberger , with whom he recorded two highly successful albums. However, heart failure and diabetes made life difficult for him. His last recordings were made with Jimmy Witherspoon .
In 1983 Big Joe was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame .
Big Joe Turner died of kidney failure in California on November 24, 1985 . Two years later he was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .
Two of his most famous songs were:
- Honey Hush (1953) - Piano on the original recording: Fats Domino
- Shake, Rattle and Roll (1954), inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001.
