The history of the city can be traced back to the settlement of the area by whites in 1781.

The founding of the city goes back to the construction of some buildings by Ygnacio Machado in 1834. In February 1908 the rapidly growing town with now 1200 inhabitants was declared a city. Inglewood became widely known through an earthquake in 1920. The devastation and the press reports spread about it led to disaster tourism, but also to an even more rapid increase in the population. From 1920 to 1925, Inglewood had the largest population growth of any American city.

The mining engineer Mathias F. Chapman founded the world's first chinchilla farm in Inglewood in 1923 with animals imported from Chile and later also began producing chinchilla clothing here .
