Victoria's Secret is an American fashion brand that belongs to the Limited Brands retail group and is mainly known for lingerie and women's underwear . Further product areas are nightwear , outerwear, swimwear , shoes and sportswear, as well as cosmetic products such as perfumes , shampoos and body lotions . The company is known for the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and its top models , the Victoria's Secret Angels . Victoria's Secret was founded in 1977 by Roy Raymond .

Companies

Victoria's Secret was founded in 1977 by Roy Raymond in San Francisco , California . Raymond himself found it shameful to buy lingerie for his wife, so his sales strategy was to provide men with a comfortable atmosphere to buy lingerie. The name Victoria's Secret is derived from Queen Victoria .

In the first year Raymond made a profit of half a million dollars and was able to expand the brand to four other stores and an order catalog service. In April 1982, Raymond began mailing the 12th Victoria's Secret catalog, accounting for 55% of the company's annual profit of $ 7 million that year. In the same year Raymond sold the rights to his brand to Les Wexner , the owner of L Brands . Under the leadership of L Brands, branches were opened across America in the 1980s. Furthermore, international top models were hired to give the brand more prestige. In the late 1980s, the Victoria's Secret catalog was one of the best-selling catalogs in the United States. With the beginning of the 1990s, the brand's profit quadrupled.

A branch of Victoria's Secret

Victoria's Secret launched its own perfume line in 1992 and began selling cosmetics in 1998. Although the brand first became aware of quality defects internally in the 1990s, the brand continued to be a best seller due to its now established hype. Much of the hype was contributed by the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which first took place in 1995, and made history as it became the first fashion show to air in Times Square and on the internet in 1998 . In 2001 it became the first fashion show to be broadcast annually on US television and worldwide in the years to come.

From the 2000s onwards there was a complete redesign of all branches, which were previously conceptually based on Victorian brothels. In the mid-2000s, Victoria's Secret continued to struggle with quality defects. Sharen Jester Turney, the then CEO , commented in 2008 that the product quality does not match the hype surrounding the brand. Nonetheless, Victoria's Secret continued to be the leading brand in the lingerie industry. For example, in 2006 the New York Times reported that Victoria's Secret sales account for a third of the sales of underwear in the United States. Turney left her position in 2016. In the same year, Victoria's Secret ceased production of its catalogs, which were known as the figureheads for the brand. In the final quarter of the year, sales fell by a remarkable 7.4%. The audience ratings for the annual fashion show also fell remarkably - while the ratings at the beginning of the 2010s remained constant at around 10 million viewers, they fell to just 3.27 million viewers by the last fashion show in 2018.

Just before the 2018 show aired, Ed Razek, CEO of the annual fashion show, gave an interview for Vogue . In it he said that no plus-size and transgender models should appear at his fashion show because the show is a fantasy and entertainment. The statement went viral on social media as transphobic discrimination and caused Victoria's Secret damage to its image, which was mainly noticeable in the USA as sales figures continued to fall. At the same time, the brand is enjoying increasing popularity in China after the annual fashion show was held in Shanghai in 2017.

Models

"Angels" are those models who are under contract with Victoria's Secret. These act as spokespersons for the company and are hired for all commercials , promotional purposes and the annual fashion show. Tyra Banks , Helena Christensen , Karen Mulder , Daniela Peštová and Stephanie Seymour were the first five "angels". The angel concept was first presented in a TV commercial in 1997 and has been an integral part of the annual fashion show since 1998 .

The “angel” contract is one of the most sought-after model jobs, as it helps models to become celebrities. Models like Heidi Klum , Adriana Lima , Laetitia Casta or Miranda Kerr became known worldwide thanks to their status as "angels". In addition, the contract with its seven-figure value is one of the most lucrative modeling jobs. Gisele Bündchen caused a sensation when she signed a four-year contract worth $ 25 million in 2000, making her the best-paid "angel" to date. In 2007 the Victoria's Secret Angels received a special “Award of Excellence” and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame , which is not normally given to brands.

The cast of the "Engel" has already seen several changes and currently consists of 14 models.

In addition to the “angel” contracts, Victoria's Secret also hires faces for PINK , the Victoria's Secret line for teenagers . Zuri Tibby is currently the face of PINK .

Other models, such as Jessica Stam , Rosie Huntington-Whiteley , Chanel Iman , Erin Heatherton , Candice Swanepoel , Jessica Hart and Sara Sampaio have also advertised the line as "PINK Girls".
