Joseph Michael "Joe" Acaba (born May 17, 1967 in Inglewood , California ) is an American astronaut .
Joe Acaba grew up in Anaheim , California, USA. His parents had moved to the United States from Puerto Rico as a teenager . His father, Ralph Acaba, piqued his interest in space travel when he showed him an 8mm film of the moon landing .
education
In 1985, Acaba graduated from Esperanza High School in Anaheim. In 1990 he received his bachelor's degree in geology from the University of California . In 1992 he completed his university education with a Masters in Geology from the University of Arizona . During his college years he joined the United States Marine Corps reserves .
After working as a hydrogeologist in Los Angeles, Acaba joined the Peace Corps in 1994 . Until 1996 he trained teachers in the Dominican Republic as part of this activity . This experience led to the desire to become a teacher. This was followed by a position as manager of the Caribbean Marine Research Center on Lee Stocking Island in the Bahamas .
Upon returning to the United States, Acaba moved to Florida. There he worked for about a year as coordinator of a project for the reintroduction of mangroves in Vero Beach. This activity included extensive work with various school groups. This was followed by a position as a teacher at Melbourne High School in Brevard County , Florida. After a year he moved to Dunnellon Middle School, also in Florida, where he taught math and science.
Astronaut activity
On May 6, 2004, Acaba's election as a candidate for NASA's astronaut program was announced. He completed his training on February 10, 2006 and was now a so-called Educator Astronaut in the new, 19th group of astronauts at NASA. As a member of NASA's Educator Astronaut Program , it was his job to convey the attractiveness of space travel to teachers and students and thus to inspire a new generation of researchers. Acaba is a radio amateur with the callsign KE5DAR.
STS-119
In October 2007 he was assigned to the STS-119 space mission . During this space shuttle mission, the last solar cell element on the ISS was brought into space. The launch took place on March 15, 2009. The STS-119 mission ended successfully on March 28, 2009 with the landing at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Soyuz TMA-04M
Acaba began its second space flight on May 15, 2012 with the Soyuz TMA-04M spacecraft . He worked as a flight engineer on ISS expeditions 31 and 32 for four months on board the ISS . The return to earth took place on September 17, 2012.
ISS expedition 53/54
On March 28, 2017, NASA announced that Acaba had been allocated for ISS Expeditions 53 and 54 . Acaba took off for the ISS on September 12, 2017 with the Soyuz MS-06 spacecraft and worked there until February 28, 2018.
