Wikon is a municipality in the Willisau constituency in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland .

geography

Wiigge , as the locals call the community, is located south of Zofingen between the Wigger in the west and the Uerke in the east. Except in the south, the municipality always borders on the neighboring canton of Aargau. Four of the six main settlements are on the Wigglertal plain. In addition to Wikon-Dorf, these are Adelboden 1.1 km to the north ( 439  m above sea level ), Rotfarb ( 436  m above sea level ; 1.7 km northwest of the village) and the area west of the village at the Brittnau station -Wikon, which has grown together with Wikon-Dorf. Wikon-Oberdorf ( 495  m above sea level ; 600 m east of the village) and the small hamlet Moosersagi ( 533  m above sea level ; 2.6 km northeast of the village) on the eastern municipal border are other noteworthy settlements along with a few homesteads.

Moosersagi is located on the Uerke in the valley of the same name. This brook forms the border to Wiliberg in the canton of Aargau . The area east of the Wigger Plain is heavily forested and very hilly. To the southeast of Wikon-Dorf lies the wooded Birchberg ( 629  m above sea level ) and to the east of the village the Riedwald . To the east of Adelboden are the castle forest and a wooded height called Galgenberg ( 586  m above sea level ). The forest areas of Lienihubel ( 661  m above sea level ), Eichbühl , Mösli and Langrüti connect to the east and north of it. All of these forests form a closed area.

In the far east of the municipality in the Uerketal it is very swampy. The area east of the Wigger plain is therefore almost uninhabited. In the west is the agricultural hamlet of Hintermoos with around 50 inhabitants. The Altachen brook forms the border with the canton of Aargau. 39.5% of the community area is used for agriculture. More than half (51.6%; east of the Wiggertal) are forested and 8.8% is settlement area.

Wikon borders on Reiden in the canton of Lucerne - as well as on Bottenwil , Brittnau , Wiliberg and Zofingen in the canton of Aargau .

history

As finds such as Stone Age fire devices show, the community was settled very early. However, the name of the place was first documented relatively late. In 1256, Count Hermann von Kyburg sealed apud Wiggen . The castles (the sources vary between four and five castles) were built in the 11th century and belonged to the rule of the Counts of Lenzburg . Later, as mentioned above, the Kyburgs were the lords to whom the Habsburgs succeeded as heirs. Under the latter, Wikon became part of the County of Willisau. The knights of Büttikon were the feudal lords for a long time. In 1415, the Bernese and Lucerne residents conquered the Habsburg Aargau. In Wikon, both sides occupied castles and fought for rule. The municipality was awarded to Lucerne in 1470 by a federal decision . Six years later, the Lucerne residents also bought the lower jurisdiction from Hans Thüring von Büttikon, so that they fully controlled the community. Together with Roggliswil , Wikon formed the Landvogtei Wikon until 1798. During the Peasants' War , the residents held the bailiff prisoner from May 26th to June 10th, 1653. From 1798 to 1803 the place then belonged to the Altishofen district and since then to the then newly founded Amt Willisau .

economy

Despite the small size of the municipality, Wikon is strategically located in economic terms, the proximity of the larger Reiden (whose industrial area seamlessly merges with that of Wikon to the north), Zofingen and the nearby motorway connection is used by several industrial companies. Mention should be made of Hunkeler AG , Juffern AG , Flachglas Schweiz AG and ALHO Container . The four restaurants, Restaurant Schlossberg , Restaurant Bim Buume , Hotel Adelboden and the pizza courier service PizzaRoma are also located in the village .

traffic

Since 1908, Wikon and Brittnau have had a stop on the Lucerne – Olten railway line . Since this is 600 m west of the village, the bus lines operated by Limmat Bus from Zofingen train station via Reiden to St. Urban or Richenthal also ensure good connections to the public transport network. Most of the bus stops in Wikon run every half hour on weekdays until late in the evening with direct connections in Zofingen to the express trains to Bern and Basel and in the direction of Reiden to the interregional trains to Lucerne. Wikon is on the Lucerne (-Sursee) -Zofingen (-Olten-Basel) street, the so-called Baslerstrasse. The closest motorway connection is Reiden on the A2 , 4 km away.

Culture and sights

The Wikon Adventure Station offers guided tours through the old station building with all kinds of museum pieces on request.
