Luthern is a municipality in the Willisau constituency in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland . It consists of the villages Hofstatt , Flühlen , Luthern (also Luthern Dorf , Alemannic Luthere ) and Luthern Bad as well as individual farms. The pilgrimage site of the same name with the pilgrimage church Maria-Heilbronn is located in Luthern Bad .

geography

The community is located southwest of Willisau in the Luthern Valley . The municipality is 12.2 km long in north-south direction and up to 5 km wide. It is one of the large municipalities in the canton of Lucerne and is located in the rugged hills and mountains north of the Napf. The eastern border goes from the Napf ( 1,406  m above sea level ) always northwards, turns north-east from Brügglismatt to the west to the Warmisbach and leads along this in a south-westerly direction to the canton border with the canton of Bern. The canton border goes south to the Ahorn ( 1040  m above sea level ). From there, the border leads in a south-easterly direction over the Gumen ( 1166  m above sea level ), the Chatzerschwand ( 1191  m above sea level ), the Ober Scheidegg ( 1235  m above sea level ) to the Höchänzi ( 1368  m above sea level) . M. ) along a ridge. From the Höchänzi it goes east over the Änzisattel ( 1196  m above sea level ) and the Niederänzi ( 1233  m above sea level ) back to the Napf. The mountain ranges that form the western and southern borders of the municipality are also the canton border with the canton of Bern .

Luthern borders the Lucerne municipalities of Hergiswil (also known as Hergiswil bei Willisau ), Ufhusen and Willisau . The neighboring communities of Eriswil , Sumiswald and Trub are in the canton of Bern.

population

The population grew until 1850 (1798–1850: + 15.3%), then the population fell sharply until 1910 as a result of emigration to the industrial areas (1850–1910: −17.5%). It rose sharply between 1930 and 1941, then remained stable for a decade and then fell until 1990 due to another large wave of emigration (1950–1990: −25.8%). The year 1990 marked the historic low of the population. After a small growth in the 1990s, a decline set in again.

languages

The population uses a highly Alemannic dialect as their everyday language . At the last census in 2000, 98.5% said German, 0.7% Portuguese and 0.6% Albanian were the main languages.

Religions - denominations

The entire population used to be a member of the Roman Catholic Church, but that changed a little with immigration from other regions of Switzerland. In 2000 Luthern had 83% Roman Catholic , 11% Evangelical Reformed , 0.5% Christian Catholic and 0.86% non-denominational residents.

Origin - nationality

At the end of 2014, 1,242 of the 1,307 inhabitants were Swiss and 65 (= 5.0%) were foreigners. The population consisted of 95.0% Swiss citizens. At the end of 2014, the foreign residents came from Germany (44.6%), Portugal (18.5%), Serbia including Kosovo (10.8%) and Italy (1.5%). 24.6% came from the rest of Europe .

history

Middle Ages and Modern Times

Aerial photo (1950)

The Luthern Valley with the church set linked to the Schwarzenbach court and the Walsberg or Waldsberg Castle (now a ruin) formed a dominion. High court rights as part of the later Freiamt Willisau were held by the Lenzburgers until 1172 and the Habsburgs until 1407 . Lutrun is first mentioned in 1275 in a papal register of the settlements in the Diocese of Constance . In 1283 the barons of Affoltern sold it to the knights of Hünenberg . They sold the valley to Ueli (Ulrich) Hugi and Hensli (Hans) Bircher in 1414. Because the latter sold its share to the city of Lucerne , it became part of the Vogtei Willisau. From 1798 to 1803 it belonged to the Willisau district, since then to the Willisau office .

Current development

A lack of jobs, long distances and a high tax rate are the main reasons for the current population decline. The financial regulation adopted by the Cantonal Council of Lucerne deprives the municipality of the previously small financial leeway. The sprawling, rural outskirts of the Entlebuch and Willisau offices are considered to be “losing communities” in the new financial system, including Luther. Today the community is fighting vigorously against the heavy migration. In September 2008, a future conference took place in Luthern Dorf as part of the “Pilot Project Community Development Using the Example of the Community of Luthern”. The project is responsible for the label NaturLUTHERTAL . The Pro Luthertal association is committed to upgrading the valley with various projects. A year-round yurt village was also up for discussion . The Luthern Bad Friends' Association is committed to upgrading the pilgrimage site.

Names

In the past, many genders immigrated from Entlebuch via the Napf into the Luthern Valley. The family names that are common today, such as Bieri, Lustenberger, Portmann, Stadelmann, Thalmann and Zemp, come from there. Older Lutherntaler names are Affentranger, Bammert, Bättig, Bernet, Birrer, Burkart, Christen, Dubach, Eggermann, Ernst, Flückiger, Frei, Geisseler, Gernet, Grüter, Häfliger, Heller, Hiltbrunner, Hodel, Huber, Kaufmann, Kiener, Klauser, Künzler, Meier, Merz, Meyer, Müller, Rohrhirs, Rösch, Schärli, Schmidiger, Steiner, Stöckli, Tanner, Wart, Wasmer, Weber, Wechsler, Wirz, Zeder, Zettel, Zimmerli and Zimmermann. The name Birrer is the most common and originated from the name Bircher in the early modern period.

The outdoor school in Flühlen was closed a few years ago, and in 2009 the school in Luthern Bad also had to close its doors. The closest canton school (secondary level II) and the vocational school are in Willisau.

A first exhibition took place under the name "Mythos Napf" with pictures by the artist Menel Rachdi .

The public transport hubs are in Hüswil and Zell , where there is a connection to the S6 and S7 lines of the Lucerne S-Bahn . The Luthern Valley is opened up by the PostBus course Zell - Hüswil - Ruefswil - Hofstatt - Luthern - Luthern Bad . Hüswil is on Hauptstrasse 23 (Burgdorf - Sumiswald - Huttwil - Sursee - Beromünster - Reinach - Aarau). The chapel on the Heuberg, the so-called Heubärg-Chäppeli (Heuberg Chapel) above Luthern Dorf is dedicated to the fourteen helpers in need .

Place of pilgrimage

Luthern Bad , a hamlet four kilometers behind Luthern Dorf at the foot of the Napf, has been a well-known Marian pilgrimage site since 1581 , which is popularly known as " Einsiedeln of the little man". At the instruction of the Blessed Mother, who appeared to him in a dream, the gouty Jakob Minder washed himself in the spring she showed behind his house and, according to tradition, was immediately healthy. In 1583 this event was investigated by the Lucerne government. In the same year the Badbrünnlikapelle was built , which the then Bishop of Constance , Markus Sittikus III. von Hohenems inaugurated. The spring of grace is still visited daily by many pilgrims from all over Switzerland. In 1752 a second, larger chapel was built, but it no longer exists. The village square and the forecourt to the «Hirschen» restaurant can now be found in their place. The new pilgrimage church Maria-Heilbronn , built according to plans by architect August Boyer from Lucerne and inaugurated in 1950, has four bells with a mood of f - a - b - c 2 . The pastor is the chaplain Emil Schumacher.

There is a new “Luthernbrunnen”, the Jakob Minder path to the new cross, a restored halo of Our Lady in the Badbrünnli Chapel and the newly designed “Dreilindenplatz”.

The mother monastery of the hermits used to be in Luthern Bad , who were trained here before they moved to the various hermitages in Switzerland. Of this former monastery, only the vaulted monastery cellar and the "distillery" remain, where the hermits once distilled their schnapps.
