Around 1300 the community belonged to the Habsburgs and in 1407 it fell to Lucerne. Since 1803, the community has belonged to the then newly established Willisau Office. From 1941 to 1945 there was a notorious internment camp for prisoners of war in Wauwilermoos, southwest of the village. The camp commandant often treated the prisoners in an inhuman way. There is a legend of a castle that used to occupy the Egolzwilersee but was on solid ground. It went down under a curse and was bewitched with murderous underwater eddies.
