Johannes Barzaeus

Johannes Barzaeus (actually Johann Bärtschi ; * around 1592 in Sursee ; † July 6, 1660 in Schönenwerd ) was a Swiss neo-Latin poet .

Life

Barzaeus, son of a Catholic teacher who was expelled from Nyon due to the Reformation , was raised in Solothurn according to his own statements , studied philosophy in Dillingen from 1622 to 1625 and was provisional (assistant teacher) at the Solothurn Abbey School from 1625 to 1627. From 1627 to 1628 he devoted himself to theological studies in Freiburg im Breisgau , was ordained a priest in 1628 and initially worked as a pastor in Bärschwil , in 1629 at the St. Nicholas Church in Solothurn and from 1630 to 1634 in Luthern . From 1634 to 1639 he worked as a ludi moderator (main teacher) at the Solothurn Abbey School. From 1639 until his death in 1660 he was canon in Schönenwerd Abbey . During this time, he wrote his main work, the Heroum Helvetiorum Epistolae , the Swiss Heldenbriefe .

He wrote u. a. his own Marian hymn, a German translation and paraphrasing in Latin verses of the Marian hymn of St. Casimir , his main work, however, are the Heroum Helvetiorum Epistolae mentioned above , a representation of Swiss history in 25 fictional Latin letters from deserving confederates to one of their own kind about important historical events. The baroque richness of the portrayal is typical of the external appearance of this work , and the strong desire for a unity of the confessionally divided Confederation is also striking.
