Ludwig Rochus Schmidlin

Ludwig Rochus Schmidlin (born August 15, 1845 in Laufen ; † August 1, 1917 in Kreuzen near Rüttenen ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman, educator and church historian .

Life

Ludwig Rochus Schmidlin was the son of the tailor Mathias Schmidlin and his wife Maria Anna, nee. Burger. His cousin was the later episcopal chancellor in Basel , Johann Joseph Bohrer (1826–1902), who was able to win him over to the religious profession.

He attended primary school in Laufen and from 1861 the Solothurn grammar school , after which he studied philosophy and theology at the Solothurn seminary from 1866 to 1870 . On April 18, 1870 he was ordained a priest .

After completing his studies, he began as a vicar in Laufen and in the same year 1870 he was employed as a teacher at the district school in Neuendorf until he became pastor of the Biberist parish in 1875 . During this time he was appointed inspector of the theological college in Solothurn in 1877. From 1882 he was President of the School Commission for fourteen years. After he had handed in his resignation in 1915 , he accepted the position as chaplain of the von Roll'schen Foundation zu Kreuz in Rüttenen . There he dedicated his otium cum dignitate to his historical studies.

Act

Ludwig Rochus Schmidlin was significantly influenced in his intellectual and scientific direction by the historian Bishop Friedrich Fiala , whose successor he was also on the chair for church history , canon law and pastoral care at the Solothurn seminary. After the death of Friedrich Fiala, he also wrote the Swiss death calendar in 1888 as an appendix to the St. Ursenkalender in Solothurn.

He published numerous works on church history and was a member of the Journal for Swiss Church History , a member of the Swiss Idiotikon and the Bibliography of Swiss Cultural Studies .

  • In 1899 he was appointed papal secret chamberlain by Pope Leo XIII.
  • The community of Biberist named the street between the rectory and the church of St. Mary in his honor as Pfarrer-Schmidlin-Weg .
  • The parish center in Biberist commemorated his birthday on August 15 with an exhibition in which photos and letters from Ludwig Rochus Schmidlin were exhibited for four days.
