Friedrich Fiala

Friedrich Xaver Odo Fiala (* July 21, 1817 in Nidau , † May 24, 1888 in Solothurn ) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Basel .

Life

The son of a doctor and pharmacist attended high school in Solothurn as well as the higher education and training institute there , today's Solothurn Cantonal School . After studying theology in Freiburg im Breisgau and Tübingen (among others with Karl Joseph von Hefele ), he was ordained priest in 1841 and was then pastor and teacher in Biberist , Laufen , Herbetswil and again in Solothurn. In 1862 he became a member of the local cathedral chapter and in 1870 cathedral provost . After the historian had worked as a mediator in the Kulturkampf , he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the liberal-Protestant University of Zurich in 1884 .

On January 9, 1885, Friedrich Fiala was appointed Bishop of Basel. He received his episcopal ordination on May 17th of the same year by the then nuncio in Spain, Angelo Cardinal Bianchi .

Fiala's large library was added to the holdings of the Solothurn Central Library . Max Leu created a portrait bust for Fiala.
