The Swiss Society for History (SGG) is the umbrella organization for Swiss historians . It was founded on April 7, 2001 as the legal successor to the General History Research Society of Switzerland (AGGS). It sees itself as the hub of Swiss history. The SGG is a member of the Comité International des Sciences Historiques (CISH).

history

The Swiss History Research Society was founded in Bern in 1811 . The initiator for this was the Bernese mayor Niklaus Friedrich von Mülinen , whose grandfather Friedrich von Mülinen laid the foundation for the extensive library and manuscript collection of the Mülinen. Niklaus Friedrich von Mülinen remained in office as president until his death in 1833 and wrote numerous articles for the “historical researcher”, the company's publication organ. However, since the circle of members never extended far beyond Bern, the society went out again after Mülinen's death.

The Allgemeine Geschichtforschende Gesellschaft was founded on September 25, 1841. The suggestion came from the scholar Johann Caspar Zellweger , who was considered the historian of the Appenzell people. The society was supposed to devote itself to historical studies on a nationwide level and to edition projects, but was already involved in politics in the founding phase. Until the recent past, the members only met at the annual meetings. A reform of the statutes in 1977 made it possible to form specialist sections. Another reform of the statutes in 2001 led to the renaming under the current name of the Swiss Society for History.
