Luisel Ramos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Luisel Ramos (* approx. 1984; † August 2, 2006 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan model .

She died on August 2, 2006, at the age of 22, while participating in a fashion show during Montevideo Fashion Week. She felt bad leaving the catwalk and then collapsed on the way to the locker room. Heart failure due to anorexia nervosa has been identified as the cause of death . The model's father, former national soccer player Luis Ramos , later told police investigators that his daughter hadn't eaten for several days. In the last three months before her death, she had been on a strict diet and lost twelve kilograms in the process. At the time of her death, she weighed only 50 kilograms and was 175 centimeters tall. This corresponds to a body mass index (BMI) of 16.3. The World Health Organization considers a BMI of 18 to be the limit for malnutrition.

As a result of the death of Luisel Ramos, the organizers of the Madrid Fashion Week in September 2006 ordered that only models with a BMI of at least 18 may be used. They sparked a discussion in the western press about the right relationship between height and weight in models. Giorgio Armani, for example, banned ultra-slim models from his fashion shows.

In October 2006, Brazilian Ana Carolina Reston Macan , another model, also died of anorexia. A third tragic death occurred just a few months later when Luisel's younger sister, 18-year-old Eliana Ramos , died of a heart attack on February 13, 2007 . It is believed that her case was also a consequence of eating disorders.
