Ana Carolina Reston Macan (born June 4, 1985 in Jundiaí , † November 15, 2006 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian model .

Life

Reston Macan was discovered at the age of 13 in a beauty pageant, worked as a model for fashion companies such as Armani and was under contract with the modeling agencies Ford , Elite and L'Equipe . She rose to fame when she died of anorexia in São Paulo at the age of 21 . At a height of 174 cm, she had last weighed 40 kilograms. This corresponds to a body mass index (BMI) of only 13.2 kg / m² (people with a BMI between 18.5 kg / m² and 24.99 kg / m² are considered to be of normal weight according to the WHO classification). On October 25, 2006, she was admitted to the hospital with renal insufficiency due to the eating disorder . After her kidneys failed, general organ failure occurred, resulting in death.

Macan was the second model in a short time to die of complications from anorexia - in August 2006, the 22-year-old Uruguayan model Luisel Ramos collapsed dead during a fashion show. This fueled the dispute over the lean limit for photo models. In December 2006, Italy passed a rule that models participating in fashion shows must be at least 16 years old and have a BMI of over 18.
