History and organization

The Swiss Association for Military History and Military Science (SVMM) was founded in 1973 as an association under private law after Switzerland was one of the few nations without a corresponding organization at an international historians' congress in Moscow in 1972 .

It currently has over 250 members and is aimed at history buffs, the military and historians. They can take part in annual international congresses, which are held in English, French and occasionally in German, and excursions.

The seat is the Military Academy (MILAK) in Birmensdorf . There are also close financial and organizational relationships with the library on Guisanplatz and the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport .

The SVMM is a collective member of the Swiss Society for History (SGG). The board also acts as a Swiss Commission for Military History. There is a lively exchange with the commissions in Germany, Austria, France, Portugal and the USA. She has also been a member of the International Commission on Military History (ICMH) for several years .

The previous presidents of the SVMM were the officers (chronologically): Alfred Ernst , Paul Gygli , Fritz Wille , Louis-Edouard Roulet , Adrien Tschumy and Dominique Juilland .
