Bruno Lezzi

Bruno Lezzi (* 1945 in Zurich ) is a Swiss military historian , journalist and general staff officer . He worked for many years as a security expert for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and published in this area. He was also an employee of the Swiss intelligence service and a member of the Extra-Parliamentary Commission for Military Operations in Switzerland for International Peacebuilding and the Militia Commission C VBS .

Life

Lezzi was a student at the Zurich Literary High School , his history teacher was Walter Schaufelberger . He (studied history lic. Phil. ) And in 1975 at Schaufelberger, the doyen of Swiss military history , at the Faculty I of the University of Zurich with a dissertation 1914. General Ulrich Wille and the war readiness of the Swiss army to Dr. phil. PhD. Even after publication, the dissertation received an extremely positive review by the doctoral supervisor in the General Swiss Military Journal. The work on Ulrich Wille is one of the most important secondary literature on the subject today.

As a lieutenant he was assigned to the Heavy Fusilier Company IV / 63 (mine thrower), later he joined the staff of the group for general staff services as a scientific officer. From 1977 to 1983 he was a staff officer for the staff management of the intelligence and defense subgroup (UNA, today: Federal Intelligence Service ) in the Federal Military Department . In the Swiss Army he was most recently (until 2008) as a militia officer with the rank of General Staff Colonel in the Army Chief's strategy group .

From 1984 to 2009 he was an interior editor for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), responsible for security and defense policy. In 1996 he was one of the so-called yellow hats , the Swiss Headquarters Support Unit in Bosnia-Herzegovina . There he did a work for the foreign department. He has also worked as a journalist in Afghanistan, Chechnya and Kosovo. There he interviewed a. a. General Klaus Reinhardt , Commander of the KFOR Peacekeeping Force. He conducted another interview with General David D. McKiernan , commander of the international protection force for Afghanistan ( ISAF ). He devoted himself in detail to Austrian security policy , in preparation for which he also interviewed officers of the Federal Army about their deployment in the Balkans.

Lezzi is a lecturer in Swiss security policy at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Zurich. He invited high-ranking guest speakers such as André Blattmann , Martin Dahinden , Hans-Lothar Domröse , Adolf Ogi and Markus Seiler . Lezzi participated as a speaker and discussant in conferences such as the one on " Karl Schmid as a strategic thinker" (1997) and on " Peace Support Operations " (2004), organized by the Research Center for Security Policy (and Conflict Analysis) at ETH Zurich . In 2005 he moderated the symposium “Liechtenstein - 10 years in the EEA. Balance sheet, challenges, perspectives ”a panel discussion with Otmar Hasler , Hans Brunhart , Josef Biedermann and Michael Stürmer at the Liechtenstein Institute in Bendern.

At the Brandenburg Institute for Society and Security , he is a member of the risk communication working group. He is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London and a member of the advisory board of the Clausewitz Society . Lezzi was also a member of the Extra-Parliamentary Commission on Swiss Military Operations for International Peacebuilding (PSO Commission), which advised the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS), and of the Federal Council Ueli Maurer (SVP), head of the DDPS, initiated the Militia Commission C DDPS .

Lezzi appeared repeatedly on Swiss radio and television as an expert a. a. at the Tagesschau . It is also regarded as such in foreign media such as the Süddeutsche Zeitung (Germany) and Der Standard (Austria).

He is married to the classical archaeologist Adrienne Lezzi-Hafter .
