Erich Reiter

Erich Reiter (born July 13, 1944 in Fürstenfeld ; † June 10, 2015 ) was an Austrian lawyer , political scientist and ministerial official .

Life

Origin and studies

Erich Reiter came from Styria . He attended school in his hometown and was awarded the Styrian regional studies . From 1963 to 1972 he studied law and political science as well as geography , history and economics at the University of Graz and political science at the University of Vienna . 1969/70 he was chairman of the main committee of the Austrian student body at the University of Graz. In 1969 he was awarded a Dr. iur. doctorate and then in 1972 Dr. rer. pole. ( The federal function of the Austrian Bundesrat, a discussion of the reform efforts ).

Professional background

In 1972/73 he completed military service in the armed forces . Since 1989 he has been sergeant in the reserve. From 1969 he was a trainee judge and attorney and worked at the Steiermärkische Sparkasse , the Lower Austrian Chamber of Labor , the Financial Directorate (Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland) and the Vienna Tax Office . In 1977 he became deputy head of department in the Ministry of Science , and in 1980 he moved to the development aid department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . In 1982/83 he worked in the General Development Aid Department at the Federal Chancellery . From 1984 to 1989 he was also a member of the Advisory Board for Development Aid.

From 1983 to 1985 he was the office manager of Defense Minister Friedhelm Frischenschlager (FPÖ). From 1986/87 he headed the presidential and legal section in the Federal Ministry for National Defense . In 1992 he became section head . From 1997 to 2006 he was then head of the Military Science Office (MWB) and commissioner for strategic studies . From 2001 to 2006 he was director of security policy and was also a member of the National Security Council . From 2002 to 2004 he was a representative of the Federal Ministry for National Defense in the Council for Questions of Austrian Integration and Foreign Policy.

Scientific and other activities

From 1978 to 1984 he was head of the Ludwig Bolzmann Institute for Science Research and from 1984 to 1988 for Political Sociology, after which he was a consultant. In 1984 he became a lecturer at the University of Klagenfurt and in 1987 at the University of Graz, where he was appointed honorary professor for international economic and social comparisons in 1999 . He was also a member of a commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . Reiter was the author / editor of numerous political science books.

Reiter was a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London, Vice President of the Austrian Society for Political and Strategic Studies and Executive President of the Central European Nations Cooperation in Peace Support (CENCOOP). The United States Army Court of Military Review made him an honorary member. He was also a long board member of the International Society for Defense Law and Martial Law and editor of the yearbook for international security policy .

He was president of the cultural association at Semmering.

Political commitment

Reiter was a member of the FPÖ for years and was regarded as the party's liberal thought leader. After Jörg Haider's election , he broke with his party spiritually. Nevertheless, he tried to enforce liberal ideas about the Attersee district . From 1992 to 2000 and from 2005 to 2006 he was President of the FPÖ-affiliated Liberal Club in Vienna. He finally resigned from the FPÖ due to the unstoppable shift to the right, but at the same time stayed away from the Liberal Forum around Heide Schmidt . Instead, in 2005 he was the founding president of the International Institute for Liberal Politics Vienna (IILP), a pro-European think tank promoting liberal politics.
