Military service

Military service is the legal generic term in Austria for some types of service carried out in the armed forces, which are anchored on the one hand in the context of general conscription and on the other hand in the context of the militia system .

The term is derived from the fact that every Austrian who is liable for military service from the position (examination and fitness assessment; compulsory military service legally from the age of 17, in fact from the age of 18) to the end of compulsory military service (legally 51 year, in fact up to the age of 35 , Reserve officers , non-commissioned officers and certain special forces up to the age of 65 / retirement age) must be present for military service. This means that he is also required to report to the supplementary departments of his responsible military command . This compulsory presence also applies to Austrians abroad , but is suspended for the duration of the stay abroad, but the stay (longer than six months) itself is also subject to registration and authorization.

The military service comprises several types of military service according to Section 4, Section 19 ff of the 2001 Defense Act . The first two form the usual eight-month military service, nos. 2-4 the militia exercises and preparatory militia training .
