There are around 583,700 Austrian citizens , both expatriates and emigrants , who have their permanent residence abroad. Spread across the continents, 437,400 of them live in Europe (74.9%, of which 191,305 in Germany, 42,478 in Switzerland and 25,000 in Great Britain), Africa 15,200 (2.6%, 10,000 of them in South Africa), Asia 24,100 (4, 1%), America 80,400 (13.8%, with 36,000 in the US) and in Oceania 26,600 (4.6%, 25,000 of them in Australia). With the appropriate justification, Austrians abroad are also given dual citizenship , provided that the respective provincial government on behalf of the Republic of Austria has decided to retain them before accepting another citizenship . The Austrians abroad are also referred to as the tenth federal state by the media, organizations and politicians .

Advocacy

The representation of interests of Austrians abroad, as well as the umbrella organization of around 170 Austrian associations worldwide, is the World Federation of Austrians Abroad (AÖWB) based in Vienna . Once a year, always in a different federal state, there is a meeting of Austrians abroad in Austria, which is linked to the World Federation Conference or the AÖWB General Assembly. Since 1994 the award for Austrian Abroad of the Year has been given.

The AÖWB is also the publisher of the quarterly Austrian journal ROTWEISSROT , as well as the operator of the Austrian platform austriansabroad.org , founded in 2004 by Gerald Ganglbauer , later renamed austrians.org , which after seven years in cooperation with Yahoo! in 2011 the company switched to its own Web 2.0 technology.

Suffrage

Austrians abroad have the right to vote in elections for the Federal President , the National Council and in referendums , provided that they voluntarily register in the electoral register of the municipality of their last normal place of residence in Austria. At the same time, registration for elections in the European Parliament can be requested. Voting cards for postal voting can either be subscribed to for a period of ten years or requested individually. Different state laws apply to state elections in the federal states .

The space scientist Klaus Peter Heiss , who fought successfully for 20 years for the right to vote for Austrians abroad and who appealed to the Constitutional Court three times during this period , received the Gold Medal of Honor for Austrians Abroad.
