Friedrich was born in 1942 as the youngest of four sons and fourth of five children of Ernst Thun-Hohenstein (1905–1985; born as Count von Thun and Hohenstein ) and his wife Marie Therese (* 1911 as Freiin Wiedersperger von Wiedersperg ). After the Second World War , the expropriation and expulsion and a stay in a Czechoslovak camp, the family - his parents, the three-year-old Friedrich and the three brothers Jaroslav (* 1935), Johann (1936–1993) and Franz (* 1939) - moved in 1945 from Moravia to Austria. His sister Elisabeth was born in Litschau in Lower Austria in 1949. In Seckau in Styria he attended the Abbey High School. As a schoolboy he played in a theater group and discovered his enthusiasm for the theater.

After graduating from high school in 1960, Thun studied German and theater studies in Munich - his von is presented as an artist name due to the dissolution of the nobility in Austria in 1919, as in Czechoslovakia in 1918 - and took private acting lessons. He cast the role of cousin Franz in the film Die fromme Helene (1965) directed by Ambesser . Ambesser got von Thun an engagement at the renowned Münchner Kammerspiele , where he made his debut under Ambesser's direction in Gewitter am See by Wolfgang Christlieb. In the meantime, Friedrich von Thun has worked in over 100 television and cinema productions. In 1970 he married Gabriele Bleyler (* 1941 in Fürstenfeld ). There were two children from this marriage, Katharina Gioia (* 1974) and Max (* 1977), who is also an actor. In 1999 Friedrich von Thun married Gabriele «Gaby» geb. Schniewind (1952-2018). In 2009 he announced the separation from her.

Duchess Sophie von Hohenberg, née Countess Chotek , who was shot in Sarajevo in 1914 together with her husband Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este , heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary , was a sister of his paternal grandmother Marie, Countess of Thun and Hohenstein, née Countess Chotek ( 1863-1935). His sister-in-law Maria-Elisabeth Thun and Hohenstein-Countess Fugger von Kirchberg und zu Weißenhorn (* 1948), who has been married to his eldest brother since 1969, is the last living name-bearer of the former counts of the Fugger von Kirchberg and Weißenhorn family, the first line of the famous Augsburg banking family, and current chairwoman of the Princely and Countess Fugger Family Senior Council.
