When Ludwig goes into the maneuver , the fourth part is the rascal films based on motifs by Ludwig Thoma . Directed by Werner Jacobs . It premiered on December 19, 1967.

action

In Ludwig Thomas hometown Gamsting, a maneuver between Prussian and Bavarian troops takes place. Participating Bavarian soldiers are also quartered in the house of the Thoma family , namely Sergeant Falkenberg and the common soldier Sepp Maier, who is friends with Ludwig. It quickly turns out that the sergeant is the unwelcome brother of the village pastor “Kindlein” Falkenberg, who also harasses and harassed his subordinates. At the same time, the Prussian soldiers' commander, the jagged Colonel von Below, and in his company also the Rittmeister von Stülphagel, who is well known to the Thoma family, arrive.

Melanie, sister of Ludwig's cousin Cora Reiser, comes to visit Gamsting with the two Prussian officers. The Bavarian Oberleutnant von Busch quartered at Cora quickly casts an eye on her and begins to court her.

Colonel von Below plans to take the Bavarian troops under Captain Stumpf by surprise with the help of a complicated battle plan and thus emerge victorious from the maneuver. The Gamstinger village Bader but Gschwind overheard this project and knows about the time and place of the planned attack. At the same time, Ludwig's friend Sepp wants to poach in the Gamstinger district at night , which Ludwig learns about . In order to prevent something from happening to Sepp or even to the forester Reiser, the husband of his cousin Cora, he removes the bullets from the cartridges in their rifles and replaces them with sneezing powder. Accordingly, the nightly encounter between the two in the forest ends lightly.

Informed by Dorfbader Gschwind, the Bavarian troops are prepared for the Prussian attack during the night - the alarm is given in good time. However, since Sergeant Falkenberg, a notorious womanizer, was in the hay at a rendezvous at this point, Ludwig got the chance to make the uniform trousers that were left behind in the Thomahaus disappear and also to pour honey into his military boots. When Falkenberg joined his troops late and also dressed in leather trousers as a replacement, he was sharply reprimanded by Captain Stumpf and excluded from the maneuver. Meanwhile, Ludwig slips into Sepp's uniform and rushes to the alarm for him to prevent his nocturnal absence from being noticed.

Ludwig, who learned from Captain Stumpf that the target of the maneuver was to capture the enemy flag , succeeded in stealing the Prussian standard from the "enemy" headquarters through a clever diversionary maneuver. Sure of victory, he rushes back to the Bavarian troops and therefore does not notice that the flag is falling out of his uniform jacket on the way. When von Below noticed the missing flag, he threw all caution overboard and ordered a headless attack by the entire Prussian forces on the Bavarian headquarters. He is ambushed, and the following battle turns into a wild brawl between Bavaria and Prussia, in which the Gamsting villagers actively participate.

In the meantime, the little son of Forester Reiser and Cora has secretly left his home and is walking through the village with his dog. By chance he passes the Prussian troop flag, which Ludwig has lost, and pulls the brightly colored cloth behind him.

Finally, the German Kaiser Wilhelm II arrives unexpectedly together with the Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold. Just as Colonel von Below is forced to admit to Wilhelm II the loss of the flag and thus the end of his career, little Ludwig Reiser turns up with his find on the village meadow. Thus, of all people, Ludwig Thomas Godfather becomes the “savior of honor” of the Prussians, and everything dissolves - at the latest at the next maneuver ball - in good pleasure. In the end, Ludwig completes his revenge on Sergeant Falkenberg, who is already ailing, when he lures all of his girlfriends to Gamsting with a trick and thus publicly brands him as an unfaithful and unscrupulous heartbreaker. Falkenberg leaves the military, regrets his previous way of life and takes over the sacristan position with his brother in Gamsting.

Reviews

“Sometimes you have the impression that you have a commercial in front of you, so little are the various motifs connected. Seitz and Jacobs present the traditional contrast between Bavaria and Prussia, a humorous 08/15 variant in the world before the First World War, the usual clichés about the military and people in Bavaria and Prussia. "

"The fourth episode [...] turns out to be typical military clothing, the biggest annoyance of which is the connection of the suggestive act with a clergyman. But otherwise conventional average. No recommendation."

Others

  • With its plot, the film alludes to the great " imperial maneuvers " that took place regularly in the German Reich from the middle of the 19th century until the outbreak of World War I.
  • The national soccer players Sepp Maier and Gerd Müller as well as coach Zlatko Čajkovski appear as members of the Bavarian army.
  • Claus Wilcke is dubbed by Peter Kraus .
  • The French singer and actress Chantal Goya took on the role of Melanie.
  • As in all parts of the rascal stories , the film was shot in the Upper Bavarian villages of Beuerberg and Eurasburg .
  • Eurasburg Castle , which was largely destroyed by fire in 1976 and was later rebuilt, can be seen in its original state in several shots .
  • The title music of the film is a medley of numerous well-known military marches, including the Bavarian Defiliermarsch , Preussens Gloria , the Hohenfriedberger Marsch and the Yorcksche March .
  • A core element of the plot is the stealing of the Prussian regimental flag by Ludwig Thoma. This theft is possible because in the film the flag is only attached to the flagstick by knots that are easy to loosen. In fact, the flag cloth of troop flags is traditionally nailed to the flagpole and could not be removed in the manner shown in the film, or only by using force.
