occupation

Mariandl is an Austrian feature film by Werner Jacobs from 1961 with Conny Froboess and Rudolf Prack as well as Waltraut Haas , Gunther Philipp , Peter Weck and Hans Moser in the leading roles. It is a remake of Martin Costa's play The Hofrat Geiger , which was filmed under this title by Hans Wolff in 1947 .

action

In Dürnstein , Marianne Mühlhuber struggles as the housekeeper of the somewhat shabby hotel “Goldene Gans”, into which the old Windischgruber had taken her with her illegitimate child Mariandl. The guests stay away, the debts push down. Marianne is heavily courted by Gustl Pfüller, wine merchant and owner of the "Hotel Post".

Her daughter, Mariandl, 17, who grew up with her mother's older sister in Berlin, visits the Ministry in Vienna in person to find out the reasons for the rejection of her application for a music scholarship. In doing so, she first met the secretary Peter Hofer, whose superior, Hofrat Franz Geiger, finally took care of the Mühlhuber files personally.

During the examination of the application, it dawns on Hofrat Franz Geiger that Mariandl is his own daughter. Franz, still a bachelor, remembers the time he spent as first lieutenant with Marianne Mühlhuber. He follows the young girl to Dürnstein, where her mother Marianne is just about to give in to the wooing of the rich hotel owner Pfüller in order to escape her difficult financial situation.

Franz can avert the wedding and after a few entanglements it comes to a happy ending: Marianne and Geiger become a couple, Mariandl and Peter get together, Peter's ex-girlfriend Steffi and the wealthy Gustl Pfüller find each other and Geiger's housekeeper Franzi also finds one in a senior post office good match.

production

Production notes

The production company was Sascha-Film (Vienna) under the producer Herbert Gruber , Karl Schwetter was in charge of production.

Mariandl was partially dubbed , which was a novelty for Hans Moser. Particular problems arose when he was supposed to insert the words: "So, go ahead ..." in front of the already finished Mariandl song. After several unsatisfactory attempts, director Jacobs thanked him and secretly sent for Gunther Philipp, who immediately uttered the desired words in Moser's manner to the director's satisfaction.

reception

criticism

According to the lexicon of international films , Mariandl is "the usual game of confusion, which, as always, results in a happy ending." The film is "[s] light, superficial entertainment with a good dose of sentimentality". Filmecho, on the other hand, wrote that Mariandl was "in a highly enjoyable, cozy and entertaining film".

Prisma spoke of a "typical 1960s homeland comedy with some confusions and happy ending by Werner Jacobs [...], who once again relied on the pull of the young Cornelia Froboess", with whom he had previously done "the musical comedy Conny and Peter make music (1960) staged “.

The OÖ Nachrichten wrote in a report about Hans Moser about his role in Mariandl under the heading “The best Hans Moser films of all time”: “Supporting roles Emperor Hans Moser gives the happiness of love as Grandpa Windischgruber an earthy note. Cult film that made Conny Froboess a star. "

continuation

With Mariandls Heimkehr a sequel appeared in 1962 with the same leading actors, also directed by Werner Jacobs. In the film adaptation of 1947 Waltraut Haas acted as Mariandl, the role of mother was played by Maria Andergast , the councilor by Paul Hörbiger . Hans Moser was also there, although not as Windischgruber.

Aftermath

The long-lasting effect of the film was also shown in the fact that the Austrian-German duo Christoph Grissemann and Dirk Stermann put Karl May's heroes in Mariandl's Wachau in several episodes under the title “Winnetou in the Wachau” on their ORF show “Willkommen Österreich 2015” .
