content
Mariandl consists of two stanzas and the refrain. In the version by Maria Andergast and Hans Lang you can hear string music in the background. Sung at the beginning of the refrain, followed by the verses:
Mariandl -andl -andl from the Wachauer Landl -andl.
Your dear name sounds like a dear word
Mariandl -andl -andl, you have my heart on Bandl, Bandl.
You hold onto it and you never let it go again
This is followed by the first stanza, then the chorus sung. On some recordings, a second verse is sung and then the chorus is sung again.
The first stanza begins with the words:
When a young man speaks of love, it becomes a poem
history
This Mariandl song was not yet included in Hans Lang's 1943 Singspiel Der Hofrat Geiger . For the 1947 film of the same name, The Hofrat Geiger , Willi Forst said to Hans Lang that a song was needed , something special and tasty . One day, Lang drove home with the 41er ( tram line 41 in Vienna) towards Pötzleinsdorf and stood on the platform. Suddenly, on Währinger Strasse , he remembered the first lines and the melody for the song. He hummed it to himself, the Mariandl -andl- andl , jumped off the moving tram and even forgot to take his hat with him. The song was born.
success
The song turned out to be a great success. It appeared on numerous LPs and became an evergreen. The Mariandl song in English by Petula Clark and Jimmy Young was recorded on Polygon Record and was released by Bourne Music Ltd. as a sheet music print. The English text is from Eric Maschwitz .
The Mariandl song has long since found its way into Austrian folk songs. The song is included, for example, in the folk song book So singt Österreich , which is considered a standard work .
