Sir Jimmy Young (actually Leslie Ronald Young ; born September 21, 1921 in Cinderford , Gloucestershire , England ; † November 7, 2016 ) was a British disc jockey and radio presenter . In the 1950s he was a successful pop singer .

Pop singer

Jimmy Young was signed by Polygon Records in 1950 and became one of the two stars on the then new label alongside the young Petula Clark .

He brought out numerous records on Polygon, the musical direction of which was in the hands of Ron Goodwin . The best known was (at a time when there is no UK singles - hit parade were) Too Young (1951), the cover of a US Hits by Nat King Cole . In the same year he also recorded two duets with Petula Clark, Mariandl and Broken Heart .

In 1952 he was recruited by the record giant Decca , and a series of big hits began for Young. He made it into the top ten with Eternally , Chain Gang and More (another Cole cover). His most successful year was undoubtedly 1955 - both Unchained Melody (cover of the song from the movie Unchained , dt. Escape - Escape ) and The Man from Laramie (from the movie The Man from Laramie ) advanced to a number-one hit in the UK charts .

Radio presenter

Young still recorded records in the 1960s; but in the meantime he had found another calling: he went to the BBC and became one of the first disc jockeys on BBC Radio 1. From 1967 to 1973 he presented the morning program there. In 1973 he switched to Radio 2, where he presented his program The JY Prog , a mixture of politics, talk and music. In 2002 he retired into private life.

On June 27, 2002, Jimmy Young was beaten to Knight Bachelor ("Sir").
