Elio Carniel (born June 7, 1923 in Wiener Neustadt ; † June 3, 1991 in Katzelsdorf ) was an Austrian - Italian cameraman .

Live and act

Carniel had started as a volunteer at Wien-Film in 1942 and by the end of the war - as an Italian citizen at that time he was exempt from military service - he was already working as Richard Angst's camera assistant (e.g. in 1944 with Ulli and Marei ). From 1945 Carniel found employment as a cameraman for American newsreels, from 1948 he photographed documentary cultural short films.

His debut as head cameraman for feature films fell in 1951. Apart from Helmut Käutner's internationally acclaimed partisan drama The Last Bridge , Carniel's cinema works on harmless entertainment from the Schimek family , Eva only kisses directors , Immer die Radfahrer , Mariandl and Waldrausch limited.

In 1963 Carniel left the cinema and since then has worked primarily for television, for which he photographed several outstanding productions by director Michael Kehlmann , including the Joseph Roth film adaptations Radetzky March , Job and Flight Without End and Heldenfrühling , Carniel's last camera work.

Since the early 1970s he had been given a teaching position as a full professor at the Vienna University for Film and Performing Arts. In this position he taught camera, but continued to work in practice. In 1976 Carniel was involved in founding the Association of Austrian Cinematographers , of which he became the first chairman.
