action

After a long period of study, Jakob Lechner returns to his village as a freshly qualified economist. During his absence, his father, the member of the state parliament and farmer Alois Lechner, and the innkeeper and mayor Huber decided to marry their two children. However, Jakob does not think about marrying the young Anni Huber. Rather, he takes a liking to the dairymaid Liesl, who was taken in by Lechner with her little brother Hansl. Both hire out with him as maidservant and herding boy and live in an alpine hut.

The village pastor wants to organize a nativity play on the occasion of the restoration of the Virgin Mary in the church. Although Lechner recommends Anni as the Virgin Mary, the pastor decides to give Liesl the role of Mary. Unsure, but proudly, she takes on the role and is now busy practicing with the village community taking part in the piece. Alois, on the other hand, forbids Jakob to interact with Liesl. When he left for a session of the state parliament, Alois went to the alpine pasture to help Hansl find a lost sheep. Alois is so outraged by the refusal to obey that he throws Jakob out. He's moving to the district town.

The nativity play is a great success, but Liesl now often cries himself to sleep because Jakob has left. Hansl promises to find Jakob like the lost sheep. He secretly drives into town on a milk truck. With the help of the city children, he finds Jakob, who does not want to return to the village. Meanwhile, Alois' wife Katharina is also making serious accusations against her husband. However, he doesn't even let the priest change his mind and so Katharina packs her things to visit Jakob. Only now does Alois reflect. He goes to Liesl on the Alm. A little later Katharina appears with Jakob and Hansl in the village. Alois joins them and has brought Liesl with him - his sign that he accepts the relationship between the two. A little later the splendid wedding of Liesl and Jakob takes place.
