action

The young Martin Hinterkirchner moved from the village of Himmelsberg to Vienna , where he got a job as a répétiteur in the opera. The disillusionment follows: The position is only an assistant position, so that Martin has to hire his landlady, the former opera singer Caesarina Zwanziger, as a piano player. He secretly writes, supported by Caesarina's son Peter, Schlager, which he submits to music manager Cobold. He wrote the song La Serenata specifically for hit star Linda Borg, but it falls into Linda's manager Isolde Fürchtenich, who rejects the song unseen on Linda's behalf. Martin is disappointed and now thinks Linda is an arrogant person. Martin's grandfather Leopold, who comes to the dog show in Vienna with his Dachshund Seppl, is impressed by Linda. When the jury threw Seppl out in the first round because of its missing pedigree, it was Linda who had words of praise for the "pedigree dog".

The unmusical Peter Zwanziger has applied for Cobold's hit competition in the Wiener Stadthalle , where he wants to sing Martin's song La Serenata . He is accepted. The performance takes place in a separate room, into which the orchestral music is played via microphone. The audience, in turn, only hears the singing and decides on the winner of the competition without knowing the person. Peter took Martin with him for moral support. When he fails on the microphone, Martin steps in for him and sings the song. Both interpret the cheering whistle of the audience as a whistle and rush out of the town hall. Martin is so frustrated after the second musical setback that he returns to Himmelsberg and starts working as a pilot there.

Some time later, Peter found out from Cobold that he had won the Schlager competition. Because of money worries, he signs a contract with Cobold that also obliges him to perform. With the help of his mother, Peter manages several times to prevent his performances. In turn, he annoys his duet partner Linda Borg so much that she leaves in frustration. She has been receiving anonymous love letters from Himmelsberg for some time and is traveling to the village. She does not know that Leopold is the author of the lines. He really wants to get Linda to sing La Serenata one day. With his friend, the veterinarian Dr. Franz Kajetan, he made a bet that Linda would sing Martin's song this year. If he loses, dachshund Seppl will belong to Franz in the future.

Linda appears in Himmelsberg. Leopold pretends to be able to tell from the handwriting of the love letters that Martin wrote them, to whom Linda is unknown. Linda appears in Himmelsberg under the name Linda Bergström and disguises herself with a wig. She gets to know Martin, who shows her the area as a pilot and teaches her to ski. Both fall in love, but Isolde Fürchtenich finally turns up in the village and reveals Linda's identity. She also accuses Martin of only having approached Linda to get rid of his hit. Linda and Martin part in unrest.

In Vienna, Peter admits to Cobold and Isolde that he never sang the song at the competition. Martin stood at the microphone. Martin, however, can only be persuaded by Leopold to travel to Vienna to speak to Linda. Leopold confesses to Linda that he wrote the love letters and that Martin is innocent. He asks her to play La Serenata on stage . Finally, on stage, Martin also learns that Linda loves him. Both finally sing La Serenata as a duet - and Seppl stays with Leopold.
