Biography and artistic career

Carmela Corren wanted to be a dancer from an early age and began training in Israel at the age of 15 . Due to an injury, however, she was no longer able to practice dance and switched to singing. American television producer Ed Sullivan discovered her in 1956 during an engagement in Jerusalem . Carmela was doing her military service in the Israeli army at the time. The entertainer persuaded her and brought her to his show in New York . She went with Cliff Richardon tour through South Africa and sang in English clubs. Later, the artist acted in several music and Heimat films as well as television productions.

At the beginning of the 1960s, Corren also became known in Germany , Switzerland and Austria . She first sang for the Ariola label, moving to Vogue in 1966 and Decca in 1968 . With the song Eine Rose aus Santa Monica she reached seventh place at the German Schlager Festival in Baden-Baden in 1962. The record then stayed in the hit parades for several weeks. Corren had her greatest success with it and achieved her breakthrough on the German-speaking Schlager market. In 1963 she represented Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest in London with the song Maybe a miracle happens , where she came seventh.

In the mid-1960s, Ariola released her first LP in Germany: Carmela Corren International with songs, ballads, chansons and evergreens in German, English, French, Spanish and Greek. In 1974 the LP Raindrops was released , with songs by Burt Bacharach in Hebrew. A disco version of the Hebrew folk song Hava Nagila followed in 1979 .

From 1966 to 1970 the singer was married to the music producer Horst Geiger. The short marriage produced a daughter and a son. Since the 1980s, the remarried Corren has largely retired from show business in Florida. On rare occasions she sang at Jewish festivals.
