Annie Palmen (born August 19, 1926 in IJmuiden ; † January 15, 2000 in Beverwijk ; actually Anna Maria Palmen ) was a Dutch singer.

Life

Palmen began her musical career at the age of 15 as a singer in a Hawaiian orchestra. Then she was a member of a cowboy trio and sang with a dance orchestra in Haarlem . Winning a talent competition for the Dutch radio station KRO in 1948 opened the door to numerous radio appearances on the stations VARA , AVRO and KRO. In 1958 she achieved her first hit with the title Ik zal je nooit meer vergeten .

In 1960 she first took part in the Nationaal Songfestival, the Dutch preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest . Like Rudi Carrell , she performed with the song Wat een geluk , but the expert jury preferred her competitor. Three years later she was selected by the organizing television station as the only candidate for the national preliminary decision, in which the title Een Speeldoos, written by Pieter Goemans , was chosen as the winner. At the Eurovision Song Contest on March 23, 1963 in London , she had to compete without the Dutch orchestra because of a musicians' dispute and, together with the contributions from Finland, Norway and Sweden, remained without a point.

In September 1967 she ushered in a new phase in her career with the television series De Boertjes van Buuten (KRO). The program director Kees Schilperoort had asked Palmen to take over the role of Drika, the singing peasant girl, as the successor to Annie de Reuver . Palmen initially hesitated for fear of losing its popularity. However, their performances were a great success. In 1969, the album released for broadcast reached gold status . When the show closed in 1972, Palmen's career ended too.

She died on January 15, 2000 at the age of 73 after a long illness.
