Maywood is a Dutch pop duo from the city of Harlingen . It consists of the two sisters Alice May (actually Alie (Aaltje) de Vries) and Caren Wood (actually Doetie (Doetje) de Vries).
Band history
During the 1970s they both sang in a number of different bands . In 1974/75 they released two singles as a duo under the name “De Karina's” . From 1979, the sisters appeared under the name Maywood with a repertoire of cheerful, English-language dance-pop titles.
Her first single You Treated Me Wrong reached number 32 on the Dutch singles chart. The following single Mother How Are You Today reached number 11. Maywood landed a number one hit at home in June 1980 with Late at Night . With this song, which was also published in German without an accent under the title Lichtermeer , the sisters also made it into the top 20 in Germany.
The follow-up single Give Me Back My Love rose to number 5 in the Dutch charts in September of that year and a little later also in Germany's hit list. Distant Love at number 15 and Rio at number 3 on the Dutch charts were two other titles that also climbed into the German charts. With Mano , Getaway and Star , Maywood reached the top 20 at home three times by 1982. After that, the duo's success waned and Standing in the Twilight only came in at number 31 in 1984.
In 1990 the two musicians for the Netherlands took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in Zagreb with their only hit in their mother tongue, Ik wil alles met je delen , and achieved 15th place. The song came in at number 36 in the charts.
From 1995 Alice May and Caren Wood went their separate ways and tried to build solo careers, albeit without resounding success. The sisters made headlines in 1999 when they tried their dispute over the rights to the Maywood name in court.
After almost 18 years of separation, Maywood appeared again for the first time on October 18, 2013 to interpret a new version of Rio with Gerard Joling on the occasion of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
